Cross stitch bell pulls feature tall narrow designs, and are usually attached to a pair of bell pull hangers. The top hanger suspends the stitched piece, and the bottom hanger provides weight and ensures that the embroidery hangs properly.
Bell pulls trace their origin to an era when large houses had staff to maintain them. Stately homes would have a bell pull in each room so that servants could be summoned. The bell pulls would all be connected to the servants' area, where a bell would ring on a master board, to indicate in which room assistance was required. Bell pull designs are often in a Victorian style, as this was the period in which their use was most widespread.
Today we are familiar with them as attractive textile panels, which are ideal for decorating small areas of wall. The cross stitch bell pulls featured here are from the acclaimed designer Eva Rosenstand.
