About Cross Stitch Charts

There are two types of cross stitch: stamped cross stitch (where the design is printed on the cloth) and the much more common counted cross stitch. The vast majority of cross stitch projects are counted from a chart, which allows for a more intricate design and therefore a better quality result.

The Chart

The chart is printed as a grid of squares. Within each square a symbol is printed. This shows you where to stitch it on the fabric and which colour of thread to use.

The fabric

Cross stitch fabric has an even pattern of holes. This enables you to stitch the crosses on the fabric according to the chart. Normally you start in the middle of the design, which ensures that your stitching is centered on the fabric.

The Choice of Kit or Chart

Some people prefer to buy a kit which contains all the threads you need plus the fabric, needle and the chart. Others prefer to buy the chart seperately, especially when they already have some of the threads or fabric required.
