Tapestry Basics

Tapestry Basics

Stitch with short lengths of wool (about 18 inches) to avoid tangling and minimise the abrasion to the wool as it is pulled through the canvas.

Use a tapestry needle. These are blunt and slide easily into the holes in the canvas without splitting it. With Anchor tapestry wools the majority of projects are worked on 10 holes per inch canvas. For this you will need a size 18 tapestry needle.

Use a tapestry frame to keep the canvas taut while you are stitching. This is particularly important when using half cross stitch, which tends to distort the canvas into a diamond shape.

Cleaning Tapestry

Tapestry worked on canvas should be professionally dry cleaned and never washed, as the water would soften the canvas.

If the canvas is mounted on a chair or stool it is best not to remove the canvas from its mounting but dry clean it where it is situated. This keeps the canvas stretched while the embroidery is damp and prevents shrinkage.

Pictures should be carefully removed from their frame but kept stretched on their mounting board and cleaned as for chairs.
