Evenweave fabrics are woven evenly with the fabric threads at right angles to each other, to produce an even square pattern. The number of threads when counted vertically is the same as the number of threads when counted horizontally. In other words, the warp and the weft thread count is the same. This is necessary for counted cross stitch, otherwise the finished stitched design would be completely out of shape.Evenweave fabrics made from cotton and cotton blends are often referred to simply as "evenweaves" and linen evenweave fabrics as "linens". Cotton evenweaves are normally considerably cheaper than linen fabrics. The common sizes of cotton evenweaves are:18 count Davosa is made of 100% cotton twist yarn. 22 count Hardanger is 100% cotton. Also used for Hardanger embroidery, which originates from the Hardanger district of Norway.22 count Oslo is made from 100% mercerised cotton and is a softer fabric than the cotton Hardanger.25 count Evenweave 100% cotton produces stunning detailed cross stitch when worked over 1 fabric thread. 25 count Lugana is 52% cotton 48% modal and is also suitable for tablecloths, cushions and soft furnishings.27 count Linda is 100% cotton. A very popular fabric commonly used in cross stitch kits. More economical than the equivalent linen.28 count Jubilee is 100% cotton. When worked over 2 fabric threads it can be used in place of 14 count aida.28 count Jobelan is 51% cotton 49% modal. A soft, smooth, easy-care fabric, popular for cross stitching.28 count Jazlyn is made of 52% cotton 48% modal, with a soft handle and a subtle sheen.28 count Annabelle is 100% cotton and has a similar surface appearance to linen. Good for samplers.28 count Brittney is made from 52% cotton 48% modal and is a soft fabric with a very even surface for stitching.32 count Murano is 52% cotton 48% modal. When stitched over 2 fabric threads it can be used in place of 16 count aida.
Evenweave fabric is normally cross stitched over two fabric threads. This is normally written in charts as "(over 2)". This means simply that when stitching you skip a hole and stitch into every second hole.
