About DMC Cotton Threads

DMC cotton threads are made from the finest quality long fibre Egyptian cotton, which make it very resistant and even. It then goes through the mercerization process, which makes it shiny like silk.

Poor quality cotton threads tend to be "fuzzy", because they contain fibres which go in all different directions within the thread, and so produce poor looking stitching. The manufacturing process for DMC thread gives it a meticulous finish, for the very best stitching results.

DMC Stranded Cotton has been manufactured for over 100 years, at the same factory in the Alsace region of France, and provides consistent colour quality, even when changing skeins.

The History of DMC

In 1746, Jean-Henri Dollfus, Jean-Jacques Schmalzer and Samuel Koechlin set up a workshop to make fabric in Mulhouse.

It was the association of an artist, a trader and a financier which was at the source of the company Dollfus Mieg & Cie, which became one of the leading European textile Groups.

During the 19th century, DMC developed its two activities: printing on fabric and embroidery thread.

In 1886, DMC published “The Complete Encyclopaedia of Needlework” by the Austrian Theresa von Dillmont, which was translated into 17 languages and published in more than two million copies.

In the 20th century, the DMC Group started to refocus on its two core business where it had leadership: crafts and sportswear fabrics. © DMC
