Cross Stitch Fabrics

Fabrics for cross stitch are available in three broad types: evenweave linen fabric, cotton evenweave fabrics and block weave fabrics. This page is about evenweave linen fabrics.

Evenweave Linens

Evenweave linens are the most wonderful fabrics for cross stitch - provided you are an experienced stitcher and have good eyesight. The finished result is of the highest quality. If you want to produce a highly detailed masterpiece, this is the fabric to choose. Many top quality linens have a slightly uneven slub in the weave, which gives character to the finished project.

There are many varieties of evenweave linen, most with flax fibres as their main component. These include:

  • Cork Linen - 20 count, 100% linen
  • Dublin Linen - 25 count, 100% linen
  • Fine Floba - 25 count, 30% linen 70% viscose
  • Cashel Linen - 28 count, 100% linen
  • Bantry Quaker Cloth - 28 count, 55% linen 45% cotton
  • Belfast Linen - 32 count, 100% linen
  • Edinburgh Linen - 35 count, 100% linen
  • Newcastle Linen - 40 count, 100% linen
  • Kingston Linen - 55 count, 100% linen

    Stitching over 2 fabric threads on 28 count linen will produce the same size stitches as when you are working on 14 count aida. Similarly stitching on 32 count linen will produce the same size stitches (and therefore the same design size) as stitching on 16 count aida. The difference of course is that the linen will give a much finer and more attractive background to any unstitched parts of the design.

    Another great advantage of evenweaves is when it comes to part stitches. With aida cloth you need to punch a hole in the middle of the fabric square, but when stitching over 2 fabric threads on evenweave, the "intermediate" hole is already there in the fabric. This not only makes things much easier, but also improves the accuracy and appearance of the stitching.
