| Cross Stitch Samplers
Cross stitch samplers have changed over the centuries. The samplers with which we are now so familar, began life literally as a sample of each of the different stitches worked onto a single piece of fabric. A girl would add to it as she learned different needlework techniques, often as part of her education. The ability to produce decorative samplers of this type was considered to be a mark of refinement.
The earliest samplers were worked with horizontal bands of stitching, and featured letters, numbers and motifs with a traditional meaning, such as the dove of peace. Later poetry or religious quotations were added and ornate borders became common. Which brings us to the cross stitch samplers we know today, which are often worked to celebrate a joyous occasion, such as a baby's birth.
You can mark a special occasion in a lasting way, by working one of these cross stitch kits, for those special people in your life to treasure. We often see old samplers and wonder about when they were done and who stitched them. So if the design does not already carry such information, you might consider it appropriate to add your name or initials and the date near the bottom of the needlework in small stitching.
