How To Wash Cross Stitch

Do you really need to wash your cross stitch ?

The first thing to consider is whether you need to wash your cross stitch at all. If you have been very careful to keep you hands really clean while stitching, it may not be really necessary. But remember that everyone has natural oils on their hands and a conservationist would say that any dirt particles or oils will cause the fabric to decay over time. Also if there are any little marks, they may be a source of annoyance to you for years, once the work has been framed and is hanging on the wall!

It is most important to use good quality threads, such as DMC or Anchor to ensure that the colours do not bleed when washed. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the particular thread (or threads) and fabric you have used, including any beads, embellishments or hand dyed threads. Some of these cannot be washed at all.

How to wash cross stitch carefully

Wash your cross stitch piece on its own - not with any other item.

Hand wash very gently in a bowl of luke warm water with soap flakes or a small amount of mild washing-up liquid, without any scrubbing or wringing action, letting the piece soak for twenty minutes. Never use detergents or products containing biological whiteners or any form of bleach. Then rinse in clean cold water and repeat several times until the rinse water is clear.

Carefully lift the cross stitch piece out, allowing the water to run off it. Roll the embroidery in a white towel to remove excess moisture. Then place it flat, face up on a white towel to start drying, making sure there are no folds to cause creases.

While still damp, place it face down on a dry white towel, cover it with a cloth and iron the back on a low heat. Make sure you keep the iron moving to avoid any possibility of the piece being scorched.

Tapestry and needlepoint

Never wash a tapestry or needlepoint. These should normally be dry cleaned professionally.
