DSA theory test booking service: Data Protection Act 1998

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) knows how important it is to protect your privacy and to comply with the Data Protection Act. Find out how your information is used to book and manage your driving theory test.

Fair processing notice between DSA and Pearson VUE

The data controller for personal information collected by DSA is the Department for Transport (DfT). DSA is an executive agency of DfT and as such directly manages all personal information it collects and processes.

For the purpose of administering and conducting a variety of driver theory tests, Pearson acts as DSA's data processors. Pearson is authorised to collect and process personal information on DSA's behalf.

Processing your personal data

Personal information will be processed primarily to:

  • register candidates
  • confirm identity and entitlement
  • provide tests (including results)
  • create management information, including analysis and research to improve road safety, customer service and customer satisfaction

DSA must ensure the integrity of the driving test and the register of approved driving instructors. Your personal data may be processed during DSA's investigations into fraud and integrity. DSA may use the personal data you supply for the purposes of preventing or detecting crime and apprehending or prosecuting offenders.

Personal information is also used to provide links for validating and enabling the lawful provision of driving licences. This is done by the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Transferring and processing your data

Personal information shall be transferred and processed by Pearson in the United States of America. Compliance with the requirements of the UK Data Protection Act 1998 is established via the US Department of Commerce 'Safe Harbor' framework.

Third parties

No further disclosures shall be made by DSA or Pearson other than:

  • in accordance with the law
  • to comply with legal obligations
  • in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998

Such disclosures are listed in DfT's entry, which can be found in the UK Information Commissioner's Public Register of Data Controllers.

DfT's Public Register of Data Controllers registration

DfT's registration number is Z7122992. For a copy of this notice or further information relating to the processing of personal information by Pearson on behalf of DSA, please write to:
